Main course

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A main course is the star of a meal. It is the most important dish. Some meals have many parts. These parts are called courses. The main course is the big part of the meal.

Ways to serve food change in different lands. In the United States, people use one name. They call the main course an entrée. This is different in France. In France, an entrée is a small dish. It comes before the main part.

Where did this name come from? A man named Dan Jurafsky studied this. He says the name comes from old French. Back then, it meant the first meat course. We see this name in an old book. The book is called Petit traicté. Pierre Sargent wrote it in Paris. He published it between 1534 and 1536. The book used the name entrée de table. This meant the first course of a meal.
