A magician is a person who uses magic in stories.

They might be called many things. Some people use the words mage, magus, or spellcaster. Others use terms like enchanter, sorcerer, or warlock. A wizard or a witch is also a common name. If a magician is a very powerful leader, they are often called an archmage. These characters use magic from special or supernatural sources. They appear in many legends, myths, and fantasy books.

Different types of magic work in different ways. Enchanters often make temporary changes to things. They might change how a tool works or make an illusion. For example, a character named the Lady of the Green Kirtle can change her shape. Sorcerers are often seen as people who can change reality itself. They might even bring inanimate objects to life. Because they have such power, some stories show them as scary villains. This helped create the "sword and sorcery" style of stories.

Magicians have a very long history in stories. In old tales, a wizard is often a wise mentor. Merlin from the King Arthur stories is a famous example. Other famous wizards include Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings. Some wizards are kind, while others like Voldemort are villains. In the Land of Oz, L. Frank Baum wrote about many witches. He called one the Wicked Witch of the West. He also wrote about Glinda, who was a good character.

Many magicians use special tools to help them. A wand or a staff is very common. In the Odyssey, the character Circe used a wand to change people. In Harry Potter, a wizard needs a wand to use magic easily. If they lose their wand, it is a hard job to use magic. Some magicians also use a crystal ball to see things.

They might also study old books called grimoires. These books contain many spells to learn.

Magicians often have a specific look. Many are shown as old with long white hair and beards. They often wear long robes and pointed hats. Archaeologists have even found golden hats from ancient times in Europe.

In role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, magic has specific rules. Wizards learn magic from books, but sorcerers might have magic in their blood. Warlocks might make a pact with a powerful creature. Writers give these characters limits so they cannot solve every problem too fast. This keeps the stories exciting for the reader.
