Many people think they are the best band for this style of music.

Making the band was a long journey. It started in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1964. Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Bob Burns, and Larry Junstrom were the first members. They even practiced playing music in a carport! They used many different names before they chose their final one. They tried names like My Backyard and The One Percent. Finally, they picked Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1968. This name was a funny way to tease people. It was a tribute to a strict teacher named Leonard Skinner.

Success came quickly after they released their first album in 1973. The album was called Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd. It sold over one million copies and won a gold disc. This album included the famous song "Free Bird." Later, they released "Sweet Home Alabama," which reached number eight on the music charts.

The band members worked hard to create their sound. They often played with three guitars at once. This helped them sound just like their recordings during live shows.

In 1977, the band faced a very sad time. They were traveling on a plane after a show in South Carolina. The plane ran out of fuel and crashed in Mississippi. This accident killed Ronnie Van Zant and singer Steve Gaines. It also killed Cassie Gaines and other people on the plane. This event stopped the band's career for a while. It was a very hard moment for the music world.

The band did not stay gone forever. They reformed in 1987 for a reunion tour. Ronnie's brother, Johnny Van Zant, took over as the lead singer. They continued to tour and record new music for many years. In 2006, they were put into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is a very big honor for any musical group. Even though the members changed, their music is still loved today.
