They brought lively Irish folk songs and street ballads to people all over the world. People loved their music because it felt full of energy and life. The band was very important for making Irish folk music popular in Europe. They were even one of the longest-lasting musical acts in Ireland. Their songs and style helped many other bands find their own way. They celebrated fifty years of music together in 2012.

Making their music involved many different sounds and instruments.

Ronnie Drew used a Spanish guitar that he learned to play in Spain. He had a very special, gravelly voice that people recognized instantly. Luke Kelly was a great balladeer who played a five-string banjo. Other members played the tin whistle or the guitar to add more layers. Sometimes they even sang songs in the Irish language. They worked hard to turn their pub music into shows for large concert halls.

The group started in 1962 in Dublin, Ireland. At first, they were called The Ronnie Drew Ballad Group. They played often at O'Donoghue's Pub on Merrion Row. They later changed their name to The Dubliners. This happened because Ronnie Drew was unhappy with the first name. Also, Luke Kelly was reading a book called "Dubliners" by James Joyce. They played at the Edinburgh Festival in 1963, which helped them become famous.

They also had a hit called "The Black Velvet Band." Sometimes they faced hard times, like when the broadcaster RTÉ placed an unofficial ban on them. However, they still grew popular in Europe and the United States. In 1987, they worked with a band called The Pogues to reach the charts again.
