Lyme disease is a common sickness in the Northern Hemisphere. It is caused by tiny living things called Borrelia bacteria.

These bacteria are passed to people by certain types of ticks. These ticks belong to a group called Ixodes.

Most people get sick during the spring and early summer. This is because young ticks, called nymphs, are very active then.

Knowing about this disease helps people stay safe and healthy.

When a tick bites, the bacteria can enter the body. The most common sign is a red rash called erythema migrans.

This name means "migrating redness" because it moves or grows. The rash usually appears one to two weeks after the bite. It can grow about 2 to 3 centimeters every day. Some rashes look like a bull's eye with a dark center.

This rash is often not itchy or painful to the touch. Other early signs can feel like a flu, such as fever or tiredness.

If the bacteria are not treated, they can spread. They might travel through the blood or the lymphatic system. This can cause many different problems in the body. Some people might feel pain in their joints or muscles. Others may have trouble moving one side of their face. This is called facial palsy and can make smiling hard. In some cases, the bacteria can even affect the heart. This can cause a fast or irregular heartbeat called Lyme carditis.

Doctors can find Lyme disease by looking at symptoms and history. They might also test the blood for specific antibodies.

If a person is sick, doctors use antibiotics to help. These are medicines that fight the bacteria. Common medicines used are doxycycline, amoxicillin, and cefuroxime. Most people take these for two or three weeks. Most people make a full recovery after this treatment. Some people may have symptoms that last a long time.

You can protect yourself from getting Lyme disease. It is a good idea to wear long clothing that covers your arms and legs. You can also use insect repellents like DEET or picaridin.

These tools help keep ticks from biting your skin. While there is no vaccine for humans, there are vaccines for dogs. Staying aware of your surroundings helps you stay safe. If you see a tick, you can remove it carefully with tweezers. This is a simple way to help prevent the sickness.
