The virus moves from person to person through mosquitoes.

Two main types of mosquitoes carry it. These are Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes like to bite during the day. They often bite around dawn or in the late afternoon. First, a mosquito bites an infected person. The virus enters the person's bloodstream. Then, a new mosquito bites that person. The virus moves into the new mosquito. It can also live in animals like birds or rodents.

Symptoms usually start four to eight days after a bite. A person might feel a sudden high fever. Many people experience very painful joint pain. This pain often hits both sides of the body. If one elbow hurts, the other elbow might too. Some people also get a red skin rash. This rash can cover most of the skin. Other symptoms include headaches, muscle pain, or nausea. Most people feel better after about one week. But for some, the joint pain lasts for years.

Scientists first identified this disease in 1952. They found it in the country of Tanzania. The name comes from Makonde words. It means "to become contorted." This describes how people might move when in pain. Since the 2000s, the disease has spread much further. It is now found in many tropical areas. It can even be found in some temperate areas. Millions of people are affected by it every year.

Doctors can find the virus by testing blood. They look for viral RNA or antibodies.

There is no specific medicine to cure it. You can stay safe by avoiding mosquito bites. Use insect repellent or mosquito nets. You can also remove standing water near your home. This stops mosquitoes from growing there. Vaccines are now approved in the United States and the European Union. This helps keep people safe from the virus.
