Rift Valley fever is a disease caused by a tiny virus.

It can make both people and animals very sick. Many animals like cows, sheep, goats, and camels can catch it. For humans, the sickness can be quite mild. You might feel a fever, headaches, or muscle pains for a week. However, some people get much worse. They might lose their sight or have trouble with their brain. In very serious cases, people can experience bleeding. About 1% of people who get this disease die from it.

This virus has a very specific way it works to spread. One main way is through the bite of an infected mosquito. Two types of mosquitoes, called Culex tritaeniorhynchus and Aedes vexans, are known to carry it. Another way is through contact with sick animals. You might touch infected animal blood or tissues. You could even breathe in air near an animal being butchered. Some people might also get it by drinking raw milk. The virus can even stay alive in mosquito eggs for many years. When it rains, those eggs hatch into many new mosquitoes.

Scientists first found this disease in the early 1900s. It was first reported in the Rift Valley of Kenya. Later, in 1931, researchers were able to isolate the virus itself. This means they could separate it to study it closely. Many big outbreaks have happened since then. In 1950, an outbreak in Kenya killed many livestock. There was also a large outbreak in Egypt in 1977. During that time, about 200,000 people became infected. These events help scientists learn how to stop the virus.

Outbreaks often follow very heavy rain and flooding. This usually happens in Africa and Arabia. When there is more rain, the land gets much greener. This extra water helps many more mosquitoes hatch at once. This makes it easier for the virus to spread between animals. Because of climate change, scientists think these outbreaks might happen more often. Changes in heat and rain can change where mosquitoes live. This is a big job for people who study the Earth.

We can take many steps to stay safe from this virus. One of the best ways is to vaccinate animals. It is important to do this before an outbreak starts. If you do it during an outbreak, it might make things worse. People can also use bed nets and mosquito spray. Wearing protective gear when working with animals is also smart. Doctors can test a person's blood to see if they are sick. There is no special medicine to cure the virus yet. Instead, doctors provide supportive care to help the body heal.
