Leptospirosis is a blood infection caused by tiny living things called bacteria. These bacteria belong to a group named Leptospira.

They can infect humans and many different animals. Dogs, livestock, and many wild animals can carry them. Rodents, such as rats, are very common spreaders of the disease. This infection matters because it can be very serious for people.

About one million severe cases happen in humans every year. This causes roughly 58,900 deaths around the world.

The way this infection spreads follows a specific path. The bacteria live in the urine or feces of animals.

They can stay alive in moist soil or stagnant water. Humans get sick when they touch this contaminated water or soil. The germs enter the body through the eyes, mouth, or nose. They can also enter through small breaks or cuts in the skin.

Environmental factors like heavy rain and flooding help spread the bacteria further.

A doctor named Adolf Weil first described the disease in 1886. He worked in Germany.

He identified a very severe form of the illness. This severe form is now called Weil's disease. It causes the skin and eyes to turn yellow, which is called jaundice. It can also cause kidney failure and bleeding. Most people, about 90 percent, only feel mild symptoms. These symptoms include fever, headache, and muscle pain in the back or calves.

There are many important facts about how the bacteria behave. Scientists have identified 66 different species of Leptospira.

Some species are called saprophytes because they eat decaying matter. The bacteria move in a corkscrew style using a part called a flagellum. This helps them move through their environment. If the infection affects the lungs, it is very dangerous. This is called severe pulmonary haemorrhage syndrome. In these cases, the risk of death rises to 50 to 70 percent.

Understanding this disease helps us see how humans, animals, and nature are linked. This connection is called One Health.

When we manage waste and water, we help keep people safe. Controlling rodent populations also helps reduce the spread. People can protect themselves by wearing equipment when working with animals. Washing well after contact is another important step. Doctors use antibiotics like penicillin or doxycycline to treat the infection. These medicines help the body fight the bacteria.
