life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Anthrax is a serious infection caused by tiny germs called bacteria. These bacteria are named Bacillus anthracis.

They are shaped like small rods. These germs are very tough because they can form spores. Spores are like hard shells that protect the bacteria. This allows them to live in the soil for many years. People usually get sick by touching infected animal products or breathing in spores.

It does not usually spread directly from one person to another.

There are three main ways the infection works in the body. The first way is through the skin, called cutaneous anthrax. This happens when spores enter a cut or scratch. It often creates a painless sore with a black center.

The second way is by breathing in spores, called inhalation anthrax. These spores travel to the lungs and then to the lymph nodes in the chest.

The third way is through the stomach, called gastrointestinal anthrax. This happens if someone eats meat that has the bacteria in it.

Scientists have studied this disease for a long time. In 1752, a man named Maret gave the first description of skin anthrax. Later, in 1769, Fournier also described the skin version. The German scientist Robert Koch was very important to this history. In 1876, he proved that Bacillus anthracis was the cause of the sickness. He did this by taking a sample from a cow. He then showed that the bacteria could make a mouse sick.

Anthrax is found in different parts of the world today. It is most common in Africa and parts of Asia. It is rare in North America and Northern Europe. Globally, there are at least 2,000 cases every year. Skin infections are the most common type, making up over 95% of all cases. However, other types are much more dangerous. Without help, skin anthrax can kill about 23.7% of people. Inhalation anthrax is even harder to treat and can be very deadly.

We can protect people from this sickness using medicine and science. Doctors use antibiotics to fight the bacteria in the body.

Some antibiotics include ciprofloxacin or doxycycline. People at high risk can also get a vaccine to stay safe. It is also important to vaccinate animals in certain areas. This helps stop the germs from spreading to humans through animal products. Understanding these tiny germs helps us stay healthy and safe.
