Anthrax is a sickness caused by tiny germs. We call these germs Bacillus anthracis.

These germs can live in soil for a long time. They often stay inside spores. Spores are like tiny, tough shells that protect the germ.

People can get sick in three main ways. The most common way is through the skin. This is called cutaneous anthrax.

It can make a small, itchy sore. This sore often turns into an ulcer with a black center.

Another way is by breathing in spores. This is called inhalation anthrax. It can cause chest pain and make it hard to breathe. This form is very serious.

A third way is by eating meat with germs in it. This is called gastrointestinal anthrax. It can cause stomach pain and vomiting.

Anthrax does not usually spread from person to person. People at risk often work with animals. Doctors use antibiotics, which are special medicines, to treat the sickness.

Vaccines can also help keep people safe.
