life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Typhus is a group of sicknesses. These are caused by bacteria. Bacteria are tiny living things. Different types of typhus come from different bugs.

One type is called epidemic typhus. It is spread by body lice. This type often happens when many people live close together. Another type is scrub typhus. It is spread by chiggers, which are tiny mites. This type is found in places like Japan and Australia. A third type is murine typhus. It is spread by fleas that live on rats.

When people get sick, they often feel a fever. They might also get a headache or a rash. A rash is a red mark on the skin. For epidemic typhus, the rash starts on the body. Then it spreads to the arms and legs.

Doctors can treat typhus with medicine. This medicine is called an antibiotic. One kind is called doxycycline. To stay safe, it is good to keep clean. You can also use bug spray. This helps keep lice, fleas, and mites away from you.
