In North America, the deer tick is a main cause. Most cases happen in the spring and summer. This is when young ticks, called nymphs, are very active.

A common sign is a red rash. This rash is called erythema migrans. It often looks like a bull's eye. The rash grows larger each day. It usually does not itch or hurt. You might also feel tired or have a fever.

If you do not get help, the germs can spread. They can move through your blood or your body's fluids. This can cause pain in your joints or your face. Some people even have heart problems.

Doctors treat Lyme disease with antibiotics. These are medicines that kill the germs. Most people feel better after taking them for two or three weeks. You can stay safe by wearing long clothes to cover your skin.
