Glanders is a sickness caused by a germ. This germ is a bacterium named Burkholderia mallei.

This germ is zoonotic. That means it can jump from animals to people. It mostly affects horses, mules, and donkeys. Dogs, cats, pigs, and goats can get it too. Humans can catch it from sick animals. People might catch it by breathing in germs or touching sick fluids. They can also eat bad food or water.

There are two ways the sickness acts. The acute form happens fast. It causes fever and coughing. It can cause death in just a few days. The chronic form happens slowly. It makes bumps on the skin or nose. These bumps can turn into sores. This form can last for months. Some animals live but still carry the germ.

Doctors use a test called the mallein test. They use a protein from the germ. They put it in the eye or on the skin. If the animal is sick, the eyelid will swell up. This happens in one or two days.
