Cowpox is a sickness caused by a virus.

It makes large, painful blisters on the skin. These spots often appear on the face or hands.

This virus is zoonotic. This means it can move between different species. In the past, dairy workers caught it from cows. Today, it is more often caught from cats. Small animals like voles also carry the virus.

Cowpox is like a much milder version of smallpox.

A doctor named Edward Jenner studied this link. He saw that people with cowpox did not get smallpox. In 1796, he tested this idea. He used fluid from a cowpox sore to help a boy. Later, he showed the boy could stay safe from smallpox.

This led to the first smallpox vaccine. The word "vaccination" comes from a Latin word for cow. Vaccines help the body make antibodies. These help the body fight the virus. Because of these vaccines, smallpox was gone from the world in 1980. Other viruses, like monkeypox, are still found in some places.
