Bloodstream infection

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A bloodstream infection happens when tiny germs enter your blood. These germs are called pathogens. Most of the time, these germs are bacteria, but they can also be viruses, fungi, or protozoa. When bacteria are in the blood, it is called bacteremia. This is different from sepsis. Sepsis is when your body has a very strong immune response to the germs.

Bacteria can enter your blood in a few different ways. Some enter through a primary process, like using a needle. Others enter through a secondary process. This happens when an infection starts somewhere else, like your lungs or your gut.

Once germs are in the blood, they can travel to new places. This is called hematogenous spread. The blood acts like a highway for the germs. They can move away from where they first entered. They might reach your heart, which can cause endocarditis. They might also reach your bones, causing osteomyelitis. This can even happen near your brain or your spine.

Scientists and doctors have studied many types of these germs. For example, Gram-negative bacteria cause many infections. E. coli is a very common cause of these infections. It often comes from a urinary tract infection. In Africa, Salmonella is a common cause of bloodstream infections in children. There are also fungi like Candida that can cause fungemia. This is most common in people whose immune systems are weak.

Doctors use a special test to find these germs. This test is called a blood culture. A nurse uses a needle to take a small sample of blood. They put the blood in a special medium that helps germs grow. If germs are in the blood, they will multiply in the sample. Doctors must be very careful to keep everything sterile. If the skin is not clean, normal skin germs might grow in the sample by mistake.

If someone has a bloodstream infection, doctors use medicine called antibiotics. These medicines help fight the bacteria. Doctors also look for signs like fever or chills. Some people might experience hypotension, which means low blood pressure. In very serious cases, this can lead to septic shock. This is a very dangerous state for the body. Early treatment is very important to help people get well.
