Septic shock is a very serious medical condition. It happens when a person has sepsis. Sepsis is an abnormal response to an infection. This response causes the body's organs to stop working correctly.

In septic shock, blood pressure becomes dangerously low. This makes it hard for blood to reach the body's tissues. This state is a type of distributive shock. This means blood does not flow to the right places. Because of this, organs like the liver and kidneys can fail.

This condition works through a complex chain of events. First, an infection triggers the immune system. The body releases signals called cytokines to fight the germs. These signals cause massive vasodilation. This is when blood vessels widen much too much. Wide vessels cause blood pressure to drop quickly. At the same time, the heart may struggle to pump. This is called myocardial dysfunction. The heart has a hard time squeezing or stretching. These changes mean the body's parts do not get enough oxygen. This lack of oxygen creates a substance called lactate in the blood.

Doctors have worked hard to understand how to find sepsis. A group of experts created the Sepsis-3 guidelines. They helped define exactly what septic shock is. Before these rules, doctors mostly looked for low blood pressure alone. Now, they know that low blood flow happens even earlier. They also use tools like the SOFA score. This score helps doctors check how six different organ systems are working. If the score goes up by two points, the risk of death increases by 20 percent. These tools help doctors act fast in intensive care units.

Many different things can cause these infections. Bacteria are the most common cause of sepsis. About 62 percent of cases come from gram-negative bacteria. Another 47 percent come from gram-positive bacteria. [Note: The source percentages total more than 100 percent]. Most cases start in the lungs, skin, or stomach. Pneumonia is the most common cause of sepsis. Sometimes, medical tools like pacemakers can cause an infection. These tools make up about 1 percent of all cases. Other causes include fungi, parasites, or even viruses.

Knowing about septic shock helps us understand how the body fights. It shows how the immune system can sometimes overreact. The body tries to help, but the response becomes too strong. This is like a fire alarm that stays on too loud. It can cause more trouble than the actual fire. Doctors watch for signs like fever or a very fast heart rate. They also look for changes in how a person thinks. By watching these signs, they can provide the right care to keep the body safe.
