Shock is a serious medical emergency. It happens when the body does not have enough blood flow to its tissues.

This means the body's cells do not get enough oxygen. When this happens, the body's normal ways of staying healthy can fail. This can lead to a dangerous cycle that gets worse very quickly. Doctors must act fast to help the body get back to a stable state.

At a tiny level, shock is a struggle between oxygen demand and supply. The body's cells need oxygen to work, but they are not getting enough. This can start a loop that is hard to stop. Poor blood supply causes damage to the cells. This damage then triggers a response to increase blood flow. If this response causes more problems in other areas, the whole system can struggle even more.

There are four main types of shock. The first is hypovolemic shock, which is caused by low volume. This often happens from bleeding, or from losing fluids through vomiting or diarrhea. The second type is cardiogenic shock. This occurs when the heart cannot pump blood effectively, often due to a heart attack. The third type is obstructive shock. This happens when something physically blocks the blood from moving through the vessels.

The fourth type is distributive shock. This happens when the blood vessels widen too much. This can be caused by sepsis, which is a serious infection. It can also be caused by anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction.

Some people may also experience shock from injuries to the upper spinal cord. Other medical issues, like problems with hormones, can also lead to shock.

People experiencing shock may show many different signs. Some might feel weak, confused, or very thirsty. They might have a fast heart rate or breathe very quickly. Their skin might feel cold, sweaty, or look mottled. Doctors use physical exams and laboratory tests to find the cause. If you suspect someone has shock, call for emergency help immediately. If it is safe, lay the person down and keep them warm while waiting for help.
