This can lead to a very serious state called septic shock. In septic shock, blood pressure drops to a dangerous level. This makes it hard for blood to reach the body's parts.

Most sepsis cases come from bacteria. These tiny germs can live in the lungs or the skin. Some people also get it from medical tools inside the body.

When germs enter, the immune system tries to fight them. It lets out signals called cytokines. These signals cause blood vessels to widen too much. This is called vasodilation. Because the vessels are wide, blood pressure falls. The heart also struggles to pump well. This can hurt organs like the liver and kidneys. Doctors look for signs like a fast heart rate or fever. They also check for high levels of lactate in the blood. Lactate shows that body parts are not getting enough oxygen. Patients often need care in an intensive care unit to stay safe.
