In an ICU, doctors and nurses watch patients very closely. They use many machines. One machine is a mechanical ventilator. This machine helps a person breathe.

Other machines watch the heart. Nurses also use tubes to give medicine or food.

There are different kinds of ICUs. A neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU, is for newborn babies.

A pediatric ICU is for children. Some ICUs help people with heart problems. Others help people after a big surgery.

Nurses do a lot of work in these units. In many places, one nurse helps only two patients. This lets them give fast help if someone gets worse. Some hospitals even use a tele-ICU. This is a way for doctors to watch patients using computers from far away.
