Usually, your body fights germs to keep you safe. But with sepsis, the body's defense system goes out of control. This can hurt your own organs and tissues.

Many things can cause sepsis. Bacteria are the most common cause. Viruses and fungi can also cause it. Infections often start in the lungs, the brain, or the skin.

How do you know if someone has sepsis? Common signs include a fever. You might also breathe very fast. A fast heart rate or feeling confused are other signs. Some people, like the very old, might feel cold instead of hot.

Doctors must act fast to help. They often give fluids through a tube in a vein. This is called intravenous or IV fluids. They also use strong medicines to fight the germs. If the body is very sick, doctors use machines to help the lungs or kidneys work. This care often happens in a special hospital room called an intensive care unit.
