Leishmaniasis is a group of illnesses caused by tiny parasites. These parasites belong to a group called Leishmania.

They are spread to humans by the bite of female sandflies. These flies include the Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia types. The disease is common in warm, tropical areas. You can find it in parts of Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

It is known as a neglected tropical disease. This means it is a serious health issue that often lacks enough attention.

The way the disease works depends on the parasite. First, an infected sandfly bites someone to take a blood meal. During this, the fly injects a stage of the parasite called a metacyclic promastigote.

Inside the body, special cells called macrophages swallow these parasites. The parasites then change into a different form called amastigotes. These amastigotes multiply inside the cells and move to different tissues. This movement is why the disease can affect the skin or internal organs.

There are three main ways the sickness shows up. The most common is cutaneous leishmaniasis, which causes skin ulcers or sores. These sores can leave scars after they heal. The second type is mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. This causes sores on the skin, mouth, and nose. The third type is visceral leishmaniasis, also called kala-azar.

This is the most serious form. It can cause fever, anemia, and damage to the liver and spleen.

Doctors use many tools to find the parasite. They can use a microscope to see the amastigotes in a small sample.

These parasites look like tiny, round bodies under the lens. They can also use blood tests or a method called PCR. PCR is a way to find the DNA of the parasite. This is very helpful if there are only a few parasites in the body. Scientists have even sequenced the genomes of three specific species to learn more.

Many people live in places where sandflies are common. About 200 million people live in areas in Asia, Africa, and the Americas where the disease is found.

Right now, between 4 and 12 million people are infected. Every year, there are about 2 million new cases. There are also between 20,000 and 50,000 deaths each year. To stay safe, people can sleep under nets treated with insecticide. Using insect repellent on the skin also helps prevent bites.
