Ludwig Prandtl was a famous German scientist who changed how we understand movement. He was a pioneer in fluid dynamics, which is the study of how liquids and gases move.

His work helped create the science of aerodynamics. This is the study of how air moves around objects. Because of him, engineers could use math to design better planes and ships. His ideas are still used by scientists all over the world today.

Prandtl discovered a very important thing called the boundary layer. This is a thin layer of fluid that stays very close to a surface. He noticed that when air flows over a wing, it can sometimes separate from the surface. This separation causes drag, which is a force that slows things down. It can also cause a stall, where the air stops flowing smoothly. Understanding this helped people make shapes that are much more streamlined.

Prandtl began his journey in Freising, Germany, in 1875. His father was a professor of engineering who encouraged him to observe nature.

He studied at the Technische Hochschule Munich and earned his Ph.D. in 1900. Later, he became a professor in Hannover. In 1904, he gave a famous paper in Heidelberg about how fluids move with very little friction. This paper changed the way scientists thought about air and water.

Many important facts come from his time at the University of Göttingen. In 1907, he helped start a special facility called the MVA to study airships. He worked with many smart students, like Theodore von Kármán and Albert Betz. Prandtl also helped create the Lanchester–Prandtl wing theory between 1918 and 1919. He even helped design a way to make rocket nozzles in 1929. This method is still used to build rockets in the modern world.

His work connects to many things we see every day. When you see a plane flying through the sky, it uses his ideas to stay up. The shapes of the wings are designed using his math to reduce drag. Even the way ships move through the ocean relies on his studies of circulation. His discoveries helped turn science into a tool for building amazing machines. We can thank his curiosity for the way we travel through the air and sea.
