Lucien Febvre was a famous historian from France. He was born in Nancy in 1878. His father taught him about old texts and languages. This helped him learn how to think about the past.

Lucien did not just look at dates and names. He believed history needed more detail. He looked at the land and the weather. He studied how rivers and salt mines changed life. This way of thinking is called histoire totale. It means looking at the whole picture of a time.

In 1929, Lucien and his friend Marc Bloch started a journal. They called it the Annales. This journal helped start the Annales School. It was a new way to study history. The journal was very popular and successful.

During World War II, things became very hard. Germany took control of parts of France. Lucien worked hard to keep his journal alive. He wanted to protect French ideas during this dark time. After the war, he helped train many new students. He died in 1956. Today, streets in France are named after him.
