Lucien Febvre was a famous French historian. He was born in Nancy on July 22, 1878. His father was a philologist, which means he studied old languages. This helped Lucien learn how to study ancient texts. He went to Paris at age twenty to study at the École Normale Supérieure. Between 1899 and 1902, he focused on history and geography. He later taught at a school and wrote about Philip II of Spain.

Febvre had a new way of looking at the past. He did not want to just list names and dates. He believed history needed to show the whole picture. This idea was called histoire totale. He looked at geography, culture, and how people thought. In 1911, he wrote about the Franche-Comté region in France. He described its rivers, salt mines, and vineyards. This helped people understand what life was truly like then.

In 1929, Febvre and his friend Marc Bloch did something big. They started a scholarly journal called the Annales. This journal gave a name to their new style of history. It was called the Annales School. The journal was very successful in its early years. It even published more often starting in 1932. They wanted to use the past to understand the present.

Life became very difficult during World War II. Germany occupied parts of France. The Nazi regime made rules that hurt many people. Febvre wanted to keep his journal alive at any cost. He made some choices to protect French intellectual life. Because of this, the journal changed its name. It became known as Mélanges d'Histoire Sociale. His friend Marc Bloch had to write using a fake name.

After the war, Febvre continued his important work. He helped train many new historians like Fernand Braudel. He also helped start a school called EHESS. Febvre died on September 11, 1956, in Saint-Amour, France. Many places in France honor him today. You can find street names with his name in Besancon and Strasbourg. He also has a college named after him.
