He was known for looking at the big picture of history. Instead of just focusing on famous people, he studied how many things worked together. He looked at how trade, money, and society changed over long periods. This way of thinking helped change how people study the past. In 2011, a magazine named him the most important historian from the last 60 years. He belonged to a group of thinkers called the Annales School.

Braudel's life took him to many different places. He grew up in a rural area in France. Later, he moved to Paris to study at the Sorbonne. He taught in Algeria, where he first became interested in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1934, he helped start the University of São Paulo in Brazil. He worked with other scholars like Claude Lévi-Strauss there. Braudel said his time in Brazil was the greatest period of his life. He returned to Paris in 1937 to continue his work.

During a major war, Braudel faced a very hard time. In 1940, he became a prisoner of war. He was held in different camps for several years. Even in the camp, he found ways to keep learning. He became the leader of a camp university. He used his own money to buy books for his research. Because he did not have his own notes, he used his amazing memory. He wrote his most famous book while he was a prisoner. He wanted to focus on the long history of the world to escape the sadness of the war.

His most famous work is a book about the Mediterranean Sea.

He did not see the sea as just one thing. He saw it as a huge, complex area where people live and work. He explained that history happens at three different speeds. The first speed is the very slow change of the land and environment. The second speed is the medium change of social and economic groups. The third speed is the fast change of politics and individual people. This idea helped others see how the world is connected.

After the war, Braudel became a very powerful leader in history. He helped set up the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences. In 1962, he helped create the Maison des sciences de l'homme. This foundation helped scholars from all over the world work together. He directed this foundation until he died in 1985. His work showed that the sea, the mountains, and the desert all shape how humans live. He taught us that to understand the present, we must look at the very long past.
