Lefebvre loved to study the French Revolution. He wanted to know about life for regular people. He called this "history from below." He spent twenty years studying how farmers lived. He read thousands of old tax records. He also read old village papers. These papers showed how life changed for peasants.

He wrote many important books. One book was about the peasants of the north. Another book was about the start of the Revolution. In 1939, a new government in France burned his books. They did not like his ideas. But people in other countries still read his work. He also wrote a book about Napoleon. Lefebvre died in 1959. His work helps us understand the past. He showed how the minds and lives of people shape history.
