During the Renaissance, the House of Medici helped it grow. In 1577, an architect named Bernardo Buontalenti drew a plan for it. He designed a fortified town with a pentagonal shape. This shape is called the Pentagono del Buontalenti. To protect the port, the city used towers and many fortresses.

Livorno has a very long history that goes back many years. People lived in the area during the Neolithic Age. Archaeologists found worked bones and pieces of copper there. Later, the Romans lived in the region too. They built a road called the Via Aurelia. They also used a type of ship called a liburna. In the year 1017, records show it was a small coastal village.

Trade made the city very important and wealthy. In the late 1580s, the city became a free port. This meant goods could be traded without paying certain duties. The leaders made laws to keep the markets safe and fair. Many different people moved there to work and trade. People came from Greece, Armenia, and many other lands.

The weather in Livorno is a Mediterranean climate. This means the summers are quite hot. The heat often stays even during the night. The winters are mild and not too cold. This is because the Mediterranean Sea helps keep the temperature steady.
