The lion dance is a lively tradition from Chinese culture. Performers wear colorful costumes to mimic the movements of a lion. People perform this dance to bring good luck and fortune. It is also used to ward off evil spirits. You might see it during the Lunar New Year or at religious festivals. It also appears at weddings or when a new business opens.

Most Chinese lion dances use two performers to move one lion. One person controls the head while another moves the tail. The dancers follow a vigorous drumbeat. They also use gongs and cymbals to make music. Some dances are called "great lions" because they need two people. Smaller ones are called "little lions" and use only one person.

Lions are not actually native to China. This suggests the dance may have come from places like India or Persia. It likely traveled to China through Central Asia. In the Han dynasty, lions were brought to the court by emissaries. By the Tang dynasty, the dance was already famous. Poets even wrote about it during that time. One version in the Tang court used five large lions. These lions were led by ropes and accompanied by 140 singers.

There are two main types of lion dance in China. The Northern Lion is often seen in pairs of male and female lions. These lions look like Pekingese dogs and perform many acrobatics. They might balance on a giant ball or climb wooden towers. The Southern Lion is very famous around the world. It often has a single horn on its head. There are two main styles called Fut San and Hok San.

The Fut San style is often used by kung fu schools. It uses strong martial arts stances and energetic movements. Traditional Fut San lions have pop-up teeth and eyes. The Hok San style was created to look more like a real animal. A man named Feng Gengzhang designed it to look like a cat. This style is more graceful and elegant. These different styles show how much skill the dancers have.
