A lightning rod is a metal pole.

It sits on top of a building. Its job is to protect the structure.

Lightning carries a lot of power. If it hits a building, it can start a fire. It can also cause damage to stone or brick.

A lightning rod helps prevent this. It is made of metal like copper or aluminum. These metals are conductive. This means electricity can flow through them easily.

The rod is part of a larger system. It is connected to a wire. This wire leads to the earth. When lightning hits the rod, the metal carries the spark down. The wire sends the power safely into the ground. This is called grounding.

Many people helped study this. Benjamin Franklin made a famous design. A priest named Prokop Diviš also made a device in 1754. Long ago, some rods had glass balls on them. If the ball broke, it showed lightning had struck.
