physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A Faraday cage is a special box or room. It blocks some types of electric power. This cage is named after Michael Faraday. He built one in 1836.

How does it work? It uses a material that conducts electricity. This means electricity can flow through it easily. When electric power hits the cage, the charges move. They spread out across the outside of the cage. This movement cancels out the power on the inside.

A cage can be solid metal. It can also be a mesh. A mesh is a material with many tiny holes. For the cage to work, the holes must be very small.

These cages protect many things. They protect sensitive tools from radio waves. They also protect people from lightning strikes. Cars and planes act like cages too. This keeps their electronics safe.

Some cages are even used for clothing. Linemen wear special suits to stay safe. The suits guide electricity around their bodies. This lets them work on big power lines.
