Faraday cage

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A Faraday cage is a special enclosure used to block electromagnetic fields. These fields are types of energy that move through space. You might see a cage made of solid metal or a fine mesh. A mesh is a material with many tiny holes.

This tool is very important for protecting sensitive electronics. It can stop radio frequency interference from messing with a device. It also keeps people safe from electric currents like lightning.

How does this shield actually work? It uses a material that conducts electricity, which means charges can move through it. When an external electric field hits the cage, the charges inside the metal move. They redistribute themselves across the surface of the cage. This movement creates an effect that cancels out the field on the inside.

The electricity travels around the outside of the space instead of going through the middle. This keeps the interior very quiet and safe from outside energy.

People have studied this effect for a long time. In 1754, Jean-Antoine Nollet wrote about this cage effect. Later, in 1755, Benjamin Franklin saw it happen with a metal can. In 1836, the scientist Michael Faraday showed how it worked perfectly. He built a room covered in metal foil. He used a tool called an electroscope to prove there was no charge inside.

There are many specific rules for how well a cage works. A solid cage usually blocks more types of energy than a mesh cage. For a mesh cage to work, the holes must be smaller than the wavelength of the energy. If the holes are too big, the energy can pass through.

A thicker shield can also block energy better. However, these cages cannot block stable magnetic fields like the Earth's magnetic field. A compass will still work inside a Faraday cage.

We see Faraday cages in many parts of our daily lives. Cars and airplanes act like cages to protect passengers from lightning.

Even a microwave oven uses a partial shield to keep energy inside. Some workers, like electrical linemen, wear special Faraday suits. These suits let them work on high-voltage power lines safely. The electricity flows around the suit instead of through their bodies. This keeps them safe from being electrocuted.
