It is a glass jar with metal foil on the inside. Metal foil also covers the outside. A metal rod goes through the lid. This rod touches the inner foil. The jar acts as a capacitor. A capacitor is a part that stores an electric charge.

Two people found this tool around 1745. One was Ewald Georg von Kleist. The other was Pieter van Musschenbroek. They both made the discovery on their own.

One man named Andreas Cunaeus found a big secret. He held the jar in his hand while charging it. This caused a very strong shock!

He learned that the hand helps the charge move.

Later, people learned to join many jars together. Benjamin Franklin called these groups an electrical battery.

This name stuck. Today, teachers still use these jars. They help students see how electricity works.
