Most strikes start in clouds. Some travel from clouds to the ground. Others go from the ground up to the clouds.

There are about 6,000 strikes every minute. That is over 8 million strikes every day!

Lightning can be very dangerous to people and animals. A direct strike can cause serious harm. It can also cause fires in forests. It can even make rocks shatter. This happens when water inside a rock turns to steam very fast.

Electricity can also travel through the ground. This is called ground current. It can flow through a person's legs. This happens more often than direct strikes. Animals like cows are at risk too. Because their legs are far apart, electricity flows through their bodies easily.
