A life stance is a way people describe their connection to what they find most important. It is more than just a single thought or a passing interest. Instead, it is a deep commitment to certain ideas in both theory and practice. You might think of it as a way to view the whole world at once. This includes how a person decides what has value or meaning. Some people use the term "worldview" to say something very similar. However, a life stance focuses specifically on what is of ultimate importance to a person.

There are many different ways a life stance can work. Some people follow religious life stances, which often involve a set of beliefs and practices. These might include things like prayer, rituals, or following specific laws. These faiths often center on ideas about the cosmos or human nature. Other people hold non-religious life stances instead. These can be based on ideas like humanism, atheism, or skepticism. A life stance can be about a god, or it can be about nature. It can even be a mix of many different perspectives.

The term "life stance" is not a very old phrase. It was created in the mid-1970s by people interested in education. A man named Harry Stopes-Roe helped develop the concept. He worked with the Rationalist Press Association and the British Humanist Association. He wanted to find a fair way to talk about all kinds of beliefs. In 1974, a letter in the Times Educational Supplement mentioned "stances for living." Later, in 1976, there was even an attempt to introduce a bill in the House of Commons. This bill wanted to change religious education to "Education in Stances for Living."

History shows that using this new term was not always easy. Harry Stopes-Roe spent many years working to make the term widely accepted. In the late 1980s, he led a campaign to use it in the International Humanist and Ethical Union. Even some humanists were surprised by how much they disagreed with the term at first. He wrote about these ideas in many places, including the New Encyclopedia of Unbelief in 2007. Some people used the term to help humanism gain more respect and a clear identity. It was a way to bring different sides together in a conversation.

You can see how life stances connect to the big questions we all ask. People use them to find purpose and to decide their values. Some life stances might include humanism as a tool to reach a goal. Other life stances, like Humanism, see humanism itself as the most important value. Whether a person is religious or non-religious, a life stance helps them navigate life. It acts as a guide for how to live and what to believe. Understanding these stances helps us see the many ways people find meaning.
