Worldview

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A worldview is the way a person or a group sees the whole world. It is a big collection of knowledge, culture, and points of view. This framework helps people understand how to act and how to interact with others. When two people look at the same thing, they might see it differently. This happens because their worldviews might include different ideas or values.

A worldview can include many things like ethics or even deep emotions. It acts like a lens through which we watch and interpret our social reality.

Some thinkers have tried to group these different ways of seeing. A philosopher named Wilhelm Dilthey wrote about this in 1911. He said worldviews help us with how we think, feel, and choose. Dilthey found three main types of worldviews. The first is naturalism, which focuses on what we can see and test. The second is the idealism of freedom, which says our minds and our will are most important. The third is objective idealism, which looks for harmony among all things.

History shows that these ideas have deep roots in many cultures. The term comes from the German word "Weltanschauung." While some people think Wilhelm von Humboldt created it, he actually used a different term called "Weltansicht." The word "Weltanschauung" was used by Immanuel Kant and later by Hegel. It describes the big ideas and religious views held by many people. These views often come from the unique experiences of a people over thousands of years.

Worldviews can also help people handle very big and scary feelings. This idea is studied in something called terror management theory. This theory suggests that a worldview can act like a shield. It helps people feel less anxious when they think about death. People might find this feeling of safety through religion or even through art.

Researchers have even studied how people react when their worldview is challenged. For example, one study looked at how Canadian patriotism or religious beliefs affect these feelings.

Finally, we can look at how worldviews are built. A thinker named Leo Apostel said a worldview should have six parts. It needs an explanation of the world and a look at the future. It also needs values, a way to reach goals, a way to know what is true, and an account of where it came from. Some people think we build our own views. Others believe our views come from our community or our language.

Every person's view is a unique way of making sense of life.
