Legal instrument

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A legal instrument is a special kind of written document. It is more than just a simple note. These papers show a real legal act or a duty. They can show a right or a contract. A contract is a formal agreement between people. These documents act as proof for what happened. They show that a process or an agreement is real.

There are many different types of these papers. Some examples include a deed or a bond. A will is another type of legal instrument. You might also see a certificate or a court writ. A legislative act is a law passed by a group. These papers can be used in local or international law. They help keep track of important rules and duties.

In the past, people used seals to make papers official. They would use wax or paper to make a seal. This helped prove the document was real and authentic. This seal often removed the need for other legal steps. Today, many places do not require a seal anymore. Most legal documents no longer need wax to work.

Now, we live in an age of computers and phones. This has caused a change called dematerialisation. This means documents are becoming digital instead of paper. We use special software to check these digital files. This software can add a date and time stamp. Encryption is used to keep the files safe from changes. This helps stop people from tampering with the original text.

Many courts in the United States use electronic documents. They often prefer digital files over paper files. In 2000, the U.S. Congress passed a very important law. It is called the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act. This law says a contract is valid even if it is signed digitally. States like Utah, Washington, and California made laws first. Many other nations have also made rules for digital signatures.
