This booklet allows a person to enter and stay in a foreign country for a short time. It also helps travelers get help from their own government if they are in trouble abroad. Passports are very important for border security and managing how people move between lands. Most passports look like a small booklet with a government emblem on the front. Inside, they hold your full name, a photograph, your birth date, and your signature.

Traveling with a passport works through a system of stamps and visas. A visa is an endorsement that lets you enter a country under certain rules. When you arrive at a border, officials check your document to see if you are allowed to enter. They might add stamps to the pages to show when you arrived or left.

Since 1998, many countries have used biometric passports to make this safer. These passports have a tiny microchip hidden inside the cover or a page. This chip stores digital information to help prevent fake documents. This technology makes it much faster for officers to check your identity.

Travel documents have existed in different forms since ancient times. In the Hebrew Bible, an official named Nehemiah received a letter from King Artaxerxes I around 450 BC. This letter asked for safe passage through various lands. Ancient India also used sealed passes to control people moving in and out of the countryside. In China, the Western Han period used papers that listed a person's age and height. Even very young children needed these documents to move through imperial counties.

In medieval Italy, the word "passport" might come from terms meaning to pass a harbor or a gate. These early papers were often given to foreign travelers to help them move through specific towns. In England, King Henry V is credited with creating the first modern style of passport. By 1540, the Privy Council of England began giving out these travel documents. Things changed greatly during World War I when governments began requiring passports for security. In 1920, the League of Nations held a big conference to make passport designs more similar worldwide.
