Legal informatics is a special field within information science. It studies how technology can organize, store, and find information. This work happens in places like law offices, courts, and law schools. These organizations use many different tools to manage their data. Sometimes, using technology creates new policy questions. For example, leaders must decide how to use emails or social media in legal cases. In Europe, some rules require people to hide or destroy data to protect privacy.

Cloud computing is a major part of how legal services work today. Many companies use a model called Software as a Service. This means customers pay a fee to use software over the internet. This method is much easier to grow than older ways of working. In the past, an attorney had to use their own time for every new client. Now, they can use cloud computing power to help many people at once. This allows lawyers to focus on harder tasks while the software handles routine jobs.

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is also changing the legal world. Some platforms use AI to help solve disputes online. Other tools use AI to create a legal ontology. An ontology is a formal way to show how different objects and rules relate to each other. AI and law is a specific subfield that studies these problems. Researchers want to make sure AI tools are trustworthy and can show their work. When an AI checks a contract, it often shows its reasoning step-by-step. This helps human lawyers check the results to make sure they are correct.

People have been working on these ideas for many years. In 1970, Bruce Buchanan and Thomas Headrick made a famous proposal about AI and legal reasoning. During the 1970s, Thorne McCarty created the TAXMAN project in the United States. Ronald Stamper also built the LEGOL project in the United Kingdom. In 1987, experts started the International Conference on AI and Law. This meeting became a main place for scientists to share new ideas. Later, the Artificial Intelligence and Law Journal began publishing in 1992.

Today, these technologies connect to many parts of our lives. A city called Hangzhou in China started an Internet Court in 2019. In this court, people use video calls to talk to judges. An AI helps look at the evidence for internet and shopping disputes. There is also a standard called Akoma Ntoso for digital documents. This standard helps different computer systems talk to each other easily. These tools help make law more open and efficient for everyone.
