She started her journey as a fashion model in New York City. In 1927, she appeared on a Vogue magazine cover wearing a blue hat and pearls. This helped her become a very popular model for two years. She worked with many famous photographers like Edward Steichen and Nickolas Muray. Later, she decided to move from modeling to the art of photography. She wanted to capture the world in her own unique way. This change helped her find her true voice as an artist.

Miller learned many ways to make beautiful images.

In Paris, she studied lighting and design at a special school. She later worked with the artist Man Ray to learn more. Together, they discovered a trick called solarisation. This happened by accident when a light was turned on in a darkroom. Solarisation makes a photo look like a dream by mixing positive and negative parts. She used this style to make many famous portraits of her friends. Her work often looked strange and wonderful, just like a surrealist painting.

Her career began in the early 1900s in Poughkeepsie, New York.

She moved to Paris in 1925 when she was eighteen years old. In 1929, she opened her own photography studio in New York City. She worked with her brother, Erik, who helped her in the darkroom. During the 1930s, she lived in Egypt and took striking desert photos. She also met the painter Roland Penrose in Paris in 1937. These years helped her grow from a model into a professional artist.

During World War II, Miller took on a very important job.

She became a war correspondent for Vogue magazine to document history. She traveled to see the London Blitz and the liberation of Paris. In 1944, she stayed on the front lines during the Battle of Saint-Malo. She even visited the Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps to show the truth. One famous photo shows her sitting in a bathtub in Adolf Hitler's apartment. She wanted her pictures to serve as real evidence of what happened. Her brave work helped people understand the many sides of war.

Even though she was a great artist, people did not always agree. For a long time, many people denied her recognition as a real artist. This was partly because she was a woman working in a hard field. It was not until her son shared her work that her fame grew. He wrote a biography about her in 1985 to help the world remember. Today, we see her as a vital part of art history. Her photos connect the beauty of fashion with the truth of history. She showed us that photography can be both art and news.
