The Laniakea supercluster is a giant home in space.

Its name comes from the Hawaiian language. It means "immense heaven." A professor named Nawaʻa Napoleon suggested this name. It honors people who used the stars to travel the ocean.

Laniakea is a supercluster. This is a very large group of galaxies. It holds our Milky Way galaxy and 100,000 others. Most galaxies in this group move toward one center. This center is called the Great Attractor. It is a point with strong gravity. This gravity pulls galaxies toward it.

Laniakea contains many smaller parts. These include the Virgo and Hydra-Centaurus superclusters. Some scientists call Laniakea a "supercluster cocoon." This means it holds smaller groups inside it.

Laniakea is not held together by gravity alone. Some studies say it will not stay together. It might be torn apart by dark energy. This is a force in space. Laniakea is also part of a bigger structure. We call this the Pisces–Cetus Supercluster Complex. Both are among the largest things we can see.
