Long ago, many people moved to Borneo.
They came to work in mines. They looked for gold and tin. A man named Luo Fangbo started a group. It was called the Lanfang Company. The people chose their own leaders. This helped them work together. Most people farmed or traded goods. They even had a way to defend themselves. Later, the Dutch came to take the land. This group had to end. It was a very busy place to live.
In the 1700s, many Chinese workers moved to Borneo. They came to work in gold and tin mines. In 1777, a man named Luo Fangbo started a group. This group was the Lanfang Company. It soon became a government called the Lanfang Republic.
Luo Fangbo was the first leader. He wanted to keep his people safe. He made a trade deal with the Qing Empire. This helped stop the Dutch from attacking for a time. The republic used democratic ideas. This means the people helped make choices. They elected leaders at many levels. Most people worked in mines, farms, or trade. They did not have a full army. Instead, they had a group of people to defend them.
Luo Fangbo led until 1795. After him, twelve different leaders were elected. They helped with farming and schools. But things changed in the 1800s. The Dutch began to take more land. The people in Mandor fought back. They did not have good weapons. In 1884, the Dutch took control. This ended the Lanfang Republic. Many people moved to new places like Singapore.
The Lanfang Republic was a special way of living in Western Borneo. It was also called the Lanfang Company. This group lived in the land of the Sultanate of Sambas. It was a place where people worked together to run their own government. This group was very important because it was a Kongsi republic. A Kongsi is a type of company that also acts like a government. It helped many Chinese settlers live and work in a new land.
Life in the republic worked in a very organized way. The land was split into three parts: provinces, prefectures, and counties. The people used democratic ideas to run things. This means the citizens helped make big choices for the group. People even elected their own leaders at every level. Most people spent their days farming, trading, or mining. They did not have a regular standing army to protect them. Instead, they had a defense ministry that used a national militia. This was a group of people called up to help defend the land.
A man named Luo Fangbo started this group in 1777. He came from Meizhou in the Guangdong Province. He was a Hakka Chinese man who led the Southern Company. Luo Fangbo knew that Western colonizers were nearby. He wanted to find a way to keep his people safe. He asked the Qing Empire to let Lanfang be a tributary state. The Qianlong Emperor did not agree to that specific idea. However, the Emperor did accept a trade agreement with them. Luo used this trade deal to show loyalty to the Qing Empire. This helped stop the Dutch from attacking for a while.
Luo Fangbo led the republic until he died in 1795. After he passed away, the people elected Jiang Wubo as the next president. In total, twelve different leaders were elected to help the people. These leaders worked hard to make life better for everyone. They improved how people farmed their crops. They also helped grow the mines and build better schools. The republic even had an alliance with Sultan Abdurrahman of the Pontianak Sultanate. These leaders helped the community grow for many years.
Things became very difficult during the 1800s. The Qing Empire began to grow much weaker. At the same time, the Dutch began to expand their reach. The Dutch East Indies Army fought three different campaigns against the group. One was from 1822 to 1824, and another was from 1850 to 1854. The final struggle happened in Mandor between 1884 and 1885. The people in Mandor tried to fight back with great courage. Sadly, they did not have the best weapons to win. Lin Ah Sin was the very last leader of Lanfang. After the Dutch took control in 1884, many people moved to Singapore or Sumatra.
The Lanfang Republic was a unique political entity in Western Borneo. It is also known as the Lanfang Company. This group operated as a Kongsi republic. A Kongsi is a type of company that also functions as a government. The republic existed within the territory of the Sultanate of Sambas. It was established in 1777 by a Hakka Chinese man named Luo Fangbo. This community was significant because it provided a structured way for Chinese settlers to live and govern themselves.
The republic grew from the needs of Chinese laborers. In the 18th century, sultans in Western Borneo imported Chinese workers. These workers were needed for gold and tin mining. Many mining companies gained some political autonomy. However, Lanfang became the most famous of these organizations. It was founded by Luo Fangbo, who came from Meizhou in the Guangdong Province. He led the Southern Company and established the Lanfang Company with its capital in Mandor. The settlers elected him as their first leader.
Luo Fangbo used clever diplomacy to protect his people. He knew Western colonizers were nearby. He wanted to seek asylum from the Qing Empire. He proposed that Lanfang become a tributary state of the Qing Empire. The Qianlong Emperor did not accept this specific proposal. However, the Emperor did agree to a trade agreement. Luo used this agreement to demonstrate loyalty to the Qing Empire. This act of diplomacy intimidated the Dutch. It forced them to stop their hostile activities against the republic for a time.
Governance in Lanfang followed many democratic principles. The republic required the consultation of its citizenry for state matters. The administration was organized into three distinct tiers. These levels were the province, the prefecture, and the county. Citizens elected leaders at every one of these levels. Most people spent their time farming, trading, or mining. The republic did not maintain a standing military. Instead, a defense ministry administered a national militia. This militia was based on the system of conscription.
Leadership continued long after the founder's death. Luo Fangbo served as the head of state until 1795. After he died, the citizens elected Jiang Wubo as the next president. In total, twelve different leaders were elected to lead the republic. These leaders helped expand mine production and agricultural techniques. They also focused on cultural education and military training. The republic maintained an alliance with Sultan Abdurrahman of the Pontianak Sultanate. This alliance helped the community thrive for many years.
Challenges arose in the mid-to-late 19th century. The Chinese Qing Empire began to weaken significantly. During this time, the Dutch began to expand their influence. The Dutch East Indies Army launched three separate campaigns against the company. The first was the Expedition to the West Coast of Borneo from 1822 to 1824. The second was an expedition against the Chinese in Montrado from 1850 to 1854. The final campaign was a Chinese uprising in Mandor between 1884 and 1885. This last conflict resulted in the loss of autonomy for the Chinese people.
The resistance in Mandor was very tenacious. However, the community failed to stop the Dutch due to poor weaponry. Lin Ah Sin served as the last leader of Lanfang. Following the Dutch occupation in 1884, many citizens moved to Sumatra or Singapore. The Dutch were careful not to openly annex the lands immediately. They did this because they were wary of intervention from the Qing Empire. They instead created a puppet regime to control the area. The Dutch officially proclaimed their occupation in 1912 after the Qing Dynasty collapsed.
History preserves the story of Lanfang through specific records. Most other Chinese mining organizations left no written accounts. We know about Lanfang because of dedicated historians. Yap Siong-yoen was the son-in-law of the last kapitan of the Lanfang Company. He wrote a history that was translated into Dutch in 1885. Additionally, the Dutch sinologist J. J. M. de Groot recorded the history. He worked with the last President, Liu Asheng, to gather these facts. These records allow us to understand this unique era of Borneo's history.
