It sits in the province of Manitoba. This lake is the eleventh-largest in all of Canada. It is about 195 kilometers long. The lake is shaped like a long line. Its name tells us a story about the water. Winnipeg means "big muddy waters." The name Winnipegosis means "little muddy waters." This is because of the wetlands near the shore.

The lake sits in a special place on Earth. It rests on the floor of an old glacial lake. That old lake was named Lake Agassiz. Lake Winnipegosis is the second-largest lake in central Manitoba. It sits near two other big lakes. Lake Winnipeg is the largest one nearby. Lake Manitoba is the other large neighbor. A small strip of land separates these lakes. At the north end, the land is 6 kilometers wide. At the southeast end, the land is 3 kilometers wide.

Many rivers bring water into the lake. These rivers are called tributaries. Some of these rivers include the Mossey River. The Point River and Pine River also flow in. The North Duck River and Pelican River help too. The Shoal River and Steeprock River are others. The Red Deer River and Overflowing River join in as well. Most of the water comes from the Manitoba Escarpment. The lake then drains out through the Waterhen River. This water flows into Lake Manitoba.

There is a large island in the middle. It is called Birch Island. It is the biggest island in the lake. Birch Island is part of a provincial park. This park was created in 2010. The island sits near the Chitek Lake Park Reserve. Many small towns sit near the water. Some towns are south of the island. These include Winnipegosis and Camperville. Other towns are Pine Creek and Duck Bay. Salt Point and Meadow Portage are also there. To the north, people live in Shoal River. They also live in Pelican Rapids and Dawson Bay.

People use the lake for many different things. It is a very busy place for fishing. Some people fish for food at home. Others fish to sell at markets. Walleye is one type of fish people catch. Northern pike and mullet are also very common. These two fish make up most of the fishing. They account for over 80 percent of the work. People also go to the lake for fun. They enjoy angling and playing near the water.
