The name means "little muddy waters." This is because of the wetlands near the shore.

The lake sits on the floor of an old glacial lake. It is near two other large lakes. One is Lake Winnipeg. The other is Lake Manitoba. A thin strip of land separates these lakes.

Birch Island is the largest island. It sits near the middle of the lake. This island is part of a park. Many rivers flow into the lake. These rivers bring water from the land.

People use the lake for many things. They catch fish for food or for fun. Walleye is one kind of fish found here. Northern pike and mullet are also important. They make up most of the fishing work. Many small towns sit near the water. People live in places like Winnipegosis and Camperville.
