The lake has two main parts. The north basin is small. The south basin is much larger. It is the smallest of three large lakes in this area.

Many birds stop at the Delta Marsh. This marsh is at the southern tip of the lake. It is a place where birds rest when they fly long ways.

People catch many fish here. This helps the local fishing industry. In the past, people caught whitefish. Now, they catch fish like walleye and sauger.

Some people tell stories about a monster. They call it Manipogo. People have said they saw it since 1908. It is said to look like a long sea serpent.

The name of the lake comes from old words. They mean the straits of Manitou. Manitou is the Great Spirit. People used to hear sounds at a place called The Narrows. It is still a mystery what those sounds were.
