It serves as the administrative capital of the Meme Division. The city is a vital economic center within the Anglophone regions of the country. Kumba is best known for its intense commercial activity and its role as a trade hub. It connects many different areas through a complex network of roads and railways. This makes it a central point for both people and goods in Central Africa.

The geography of Kumba consists of both flatlands and hilly terrain. The urbanized flat areas are mostly found around Buea Road. In contrast, regions like Fiango and Mbonge Road feature more hilly landscapes. A river known as Kumba Water flows through the entire city. This river is a key part of the local ecosystem and supports regional agriculture. The climate is tropical, featuring a distinct wet season from March to October. This rainy season provides the moisture needed for the fertile soil.

This environment is ideal for growing crops like cocoa, palm oil, and rubber.

Kumba's landscape includes significant natural landmarks nearby. One notable feature is Lake Barombi Mbo, which sits just outside the main city. This is the largest volcanic crater lake in Cameroon. The lake is surrounded by lush forests and contains endemic fish species. These are species found nowhere else on Earth. The city's location also provides access to other important areas. Roads lead toward Mamfe near the Nigerian border and Mundemba, which is the home of Korup National Park. The city also sits near Mount Koupe to the east.

The history of Kumba is deeply tied to the Bafaw and Bakundu peoples. The name 'Kumba' comes from the Bafaw word 'Bakumbè,' meaning an umbrella tree. Local mythology states that a hunter named Midiki Bokeng founded the settlement. A monument to him stands at the Town Green.

Historically, Kumba was the capital of the Rio Del Rey Division during German rule. It remained a significant center during subsequent British and French administration. This colonial history helped establish Kumba as part of the English-speaking regions. In the 1890s, Abel Mukete became a key local leader. He eventually became the first Paramount Chief in 1929. This leadership role passed down to his descendants.

Today, the economy of Kumba relies heavily on agriculture and trade. The city functions as a massive junction for moving products across the region. Major markets, such as the Kumba Main Market and Fiango Market, drive this activity. Other notable sites include the Mbonge Road Market and the Barombi-kang Market. These locations connect rural farmers to urban consumers. The city also attracts many international traders. A 2011 survey showed that Nigerian traders, specifically from the Igbo and Yoruba communities, own more than 60% of the shops. This high percentage highlights Kumba's importance as a regional commercial hub.

Transportation is essential for maintaining Kumba's economic status. The city is a crucial road junction for the Southwest Region. The Kumba-Mamfe Road is a vital route for trade with Nigeria. The Kumba-Buea Road connects the city to the regional capital. Additionally, a railway line links Kumba to Douala, Cameroon's main commercial port. This rail system is important for transporting raw materials and agricultural goods. For daily travel, residents use shared taxis, buses, and motorbike taxis called "okada." These services provide affordable ways to move around the city.

Despite its success, Kumba faces several modern challenges. The ongoing Anglophone Crisis, which began in 2016, has caused significant disruptions. This conflict involves separatist forces and the central government. It has impacted local governance, business, and education. There are also ongoing needs for better road maintenance and improved safety. However, efforts are currently underway to upgrade the transport infrastructure. These developments aim to expand public transport and the railway system. Improving these connections will help Kumba continue to grow as a major center for Central Africa.
