Kumba has a long and interesting history. The name comes from the Bafaw word 'Bakumbè.' This word means an umbrella tree. Local stories say a hunter named Midiki Bokeng founded the town. A monument stands in the Town Green to honor him. In the past, the city was part of German Cameroon. Later, it was part of British and French rule. This history helped make Kumba an English-speaking place.
