Sunyani

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sunyani is a significant urban center in Ghana. It serves as the capital of the Bono Region and the Sunyani Municipal District. Geographically, the city is located southwest of Kumasi and is situated away from the capital, Accra. According to the 2010 census, Sunyani was the sixth-largest city in the country. At that time, it had a population of 75,366 residents. The city is a diverse place where many ethnic groups live together. These include the Akan, Northerner, Ewe, and Ga-Adangbe peoples.

The history of Sunyani is tied to the natural world. During the late 19th century, the area was a popular camping ground for elephant hunters. This history is reflected in the city's name. The name Sunyani is likely a corrupted form of the Akan word Sonnwae. It is also linked to the Akan word Osono, which means "elephant." In 1924, the British established a district headquarters in the city. Later, the construction of a road connecting Sunyani to Kumasi helped it become an economic hub.

Sunyani is located within a moist forested zone. This environment supports many different tree species. The city is home to two major protected areas: the Yaya forest reserve and the Amoma forest reserve. Several water bodies flow through the region, including the Tano, Amoma, Kankam, Benu, Yaya, and Bisi rivers. The climate is classified as a tropical savanna climate, known as Aw in the Köppen system. This means the city experiences distinct rainy and dry seasons. Because Sunyani sits on relatively flat plains, it faces certain environmental challenges. A 2024 study suggests that rapid urbanization and increased precipitation contribute to flooding risks. These floods occur when heavy rain puts a strain on the existing drainage systems.

The economy of Sunyani is largely agrarian, meaning it relies heavily on farming. Approximately 48% of the population is engaged in agricultural activities. Farmers cultivate various crops, such as cabbage, garden eggs, carrots, peppers, and tomatoes. Cocoa bean production is a major part of the local economy. However, a 2023 study noted that cocoa production is relatively low due to forest degradation and poor land management. Some farmers along the banks of the Tano River use irrigation to help their crops grow.

In addition to farming, the service sector employs about 24% of the population. The city is also home to African Global Pharma Limited. This is the only pharmaceutical manufacturing company in the city, producing generic drugs.

Education is a central part of life in Sunyani. The city hosts many different types of schools. There are 111 basic schools, 50 junior high schools, and five senior high or vocational schools. The city is also a hub for higher education. Sunyani Technical University is a prominent institution. It began as a technical institute in 1967 and became a university in 2016.

Another major institution is the University of Energy and Natural Resources, which was established in 2011. This university focuses on the management of energy and natural resources.

Religious and cultural life is very active in the municipality. About 96% of the population is religious. Christianity is the most practiced religion, followed by Islam and traditional African religions. The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sunyani, which was established on March 30, 1973.

For culture, the Bono Regional Centre for National Culture manages an art centre and museum. While the museum was undergoing renovations in 2022, it has historically organized programs for local schools. The city also has a vibrant sports scene. Coronation Park is the main football venue and can hold 5,000 people. Several clubs, such as BA Stars F.C., play there.

Transportation and infrastructure connect Sunyani to the rest of the country. The city is served by the Sunyani Airport, which was originally built in 1942 for use by the Allies during World War II. It officially opened as a domestic airport on July 13, 1974. In the city, walking is the most common way to travel. Many people also use taxicabs or "tro tros." In September 2022, Uber began operating in Sunyani. This made it one of only 18 cities in West Africa to have the service. The city also maintains a sister city relationship with Tuscaloosa, Alabama, through its partnership with nearby Techiman.
