This city is famous for its history with fabric. People often call it the "Velvet and Silk City."

For a long time, silk was the main business here. The Von der Leyen family were very important silk merchants. By 1763, they employed 6,082 people in their factories. This was about half of the city's population at that time. Their large family home was built starting in 1791. Today, that historic building serves as the Krefeld City Hall. The German Textile Museum also helps tell this story.

Krefeld has a very long and changing history. The name Krinvelde first appeared in records in 1105. In the 1600s, the city was part of the County of Moers. It was ruled by the House of Orange during the Dutch Golden Age. Later, the city passed to the Kingdom of Prussia after 1702. The population grew from 16,325 people in 1825 to 30,000 by the 1840s. In 1872, Krefeld officially became an independent city.

Many different groups of people have called Krefeld home. Mennonites arrived in 1607 to find a more tolerant place to live. In 1683, thirteen families left Krefeld to start settlements in Pennsylvania. Jewish families have been citizens of the city since 1617. Sadly, many Jewish people were taken from the city during World War II. In 1941, over 1,000 Jews were deported to the area near Riga. Today, a new Jewish cultural center and synagogue stand in the city.

There are many wonderful places to visit in Krefeld today. You can see the historic Burg Linn, which is a castle with a moat.
