The city center sits just a few kilometers west of the Rhine river. The district of Uerdingen is situated directly on the banks of the Rhine. Travelers can reach the city using the A57 and A44 autobahns. Because of its industrial history, Krefeld is often called the "Velvet and Silk City."

The city's identity is deeply tied to its textile history. For many years, silk production was the primary economic driver. The Von der Leyen family were major silk merchants and industrialists. By 1763, their factories employed 6,082 people. This number represented about half of the total population of 6,082 at that time. The family built a large residence starting in 1791. This historic building is used today as the Krefeld City Hall. The German Textile Museum also preserves this industrial legacy.

Krefeld has a complex political and territorial history. The name Krinvelde first appeared in written records in 1105. In 1598, the County of Moers was given to Maurice, Prince of Orange. This meant Krefeld was under the House of Orange during the Dutch Golden Age. After 1702, the city passed to the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1815, it was part of the Prussian Province of Jülich-Cleves-Berg. The city's population grew from 16,325 in 1825 to 30,000 by the 1840s. Krefeld officially became an independent city in 1872.

Religious groups have played a significant role in the city's development. Mennonites arrived in 1607 to escape persecution in neighboring territories. They found refuge under the tolerant House of Orange-Nassau. In 1683, thirteen Mennonite families, known as the "Original 13," left Krefeld for Pennsylvania. They traveled on the ship Concord to seek religious freedom. Jewish families have been citizens of Krefeld since 1617. By 1812, the town included 196 Jewish families and three Jewish-owned banks. Under Napoleon, the town became a capital for surrounding Jewish communities.

During the 20th century, the city experienced significant hardship. In 1918, the Belgian Army used Krefeld as a base during the occupation of the Rhineland. During World War II, the city faced severe destruction. On 21 June 1943, British bombs caused a firestorm in the city center. Many buildings in the eastern part of the city were destroyed.

In 1941, the Nazi regime deported Jews from Krefeld. A report from 11 December 1941 listed 1,007 Jews being sent to the area near Riga. They were transported in freezing conditions without drinking water for over two days. Most were killed shortly after arrival in the Rumbula forest. In 2008, a new synagogue and Jewish cultural center were built to honor this history.

Krefeld is organized into several distinct districts.

These include Stadtmitte, Bockum, and Uerdingen. Each district has a municipal representative chosen through local elections. The city also includes historic areas like Linn and Hüls. Linn has a history dating back to between 1090 and 1120. It features the Burg Linn, a castle with a water-filled moat.

Today, Krefeld offers many cultural and recreational sites. Visitors can explore the municipal botanical garden or the Krefeld Zoo. The Lange and Esters Houses serve as museums for contemporary art. The Kaiser Wilhelm Museum is another important art venue. For sports fans, the Gallopprennbahn Krefeld is a local horse racing track. The city remains a significant part of the North Rhine-Westphalia region. It continues to balance its industrial past with modern urban life.
