It sits in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is near the Rhine river. The district of Uerdingen sits right on the water.

Krefeld is known as the "Velvet and Silk City." In the past, many people worked in silk factories. One large family of silk makers lived in a big house. That house is now the City Hall.

Many groups of people have lived here over time. In the 1600s, Mennonites came to Krefeld for safety. They were allowed to build a church in a backyard. In 1683, some families left to find more freedom in America.

Jewish families have lived in Krefeld since 1617. Sadly, many Jewish people were taken from the city during World War II. They were sent far away to be killed. Today, a new Jewish center stands in the city.
